New psychoactive substances: research overview

New psychoactive substances: what is changing

New psychoactive substances keep changing faster than much of the published reference data. A new name or a small structural change does not tell you how a compound behaves in a real sample, how stable it is, or whether a screening method will see it.

For analytical work, start with a validated method and compare findings against peer-reviewed literature. Relevant starting points include the UNODC Early Warning Advisory and the EMCDDA drug profile library.

Synthetic cannabinoids deserve particular care. Published clinical reports link some compounds in this broad class with acute toxicity, including severe agitation, seizures, cardiovascular effects and kidney injury. Risk cannot be predicted reliably from a product name alone; dose, formulation, co-exposures and the individual all matter. This is a research overview, not medical advice.
